On the 22nd of July a gunman dressed as a policeman stormed the island of Utoya with an aim to kill everyone on it just after he set off a bomb in the capital of Norway Oslo killing 7 people.

No one could have imagined such a terrible tragedy and Norway is said to be in a state of shock. Just hours after setting off a bomb in the Norwegian capital, the killer headed straight to the island of Utoya where a large youth group were camping.

It is believed that attacker had dressed as a policeman and upon approaching the island young people thought he had been sent to help them, as they had already heard news of the bomb in Oslo. Sadly this was not the case and he then opened fire on the innocent people.

All over the news broadcasts helicopter videos showed people far out at sea who had swam out in the freezing water to save themselves from his fire.  More stories are unveiling of what happened on the island during the attack, young people laying among the dead hoping not to be found, other being rescued from the water by locals hearing gunfire.

The original death toll had been 93 from from the bomb attack in Oslo and the shootings on Utoya. However the police have revised the death toll to 76.

The killer was caught and Police charged a 32 year old man called Anders Behring Breivik and has been remanded in custody for 8 weeks. Anders Behring Breivik has admitted carrying out Friday’s twin attacks in Norway but has not yet pleaded guilty. He has made his first court appearance in a closed session. A judge said Mr. Berivik will be held in custody for a eight weeks, including 4 weeks isolation, and that two more people may have been involved.

Thoughts from a young person in the Vale of Glamorgan “I think it is really horrible, I am horrified by what this man did to all these young people. I feel so sorry for all the families and friends for the people that have died. I am happy for those people who did survived and I hope that they can overcome what has happened and eventually move on with their lives.”

This is so sad, and i find it hard to believe that anyone is capable of doing something like this. How does anyone think this is ok? Innocent people have lost their lives because of this man. I cant even begin to imaging how scary it must have been for all those people on the island. Think of them and their family and friends. RIP.

Got something to say?
