Too Cool 4 School... Uniform?
With the new school term just around the corner, the dreaded moment when mum or dad takes us school uniform shopping is nearing faster than we would like.
Our editorial group got into quite a long debate on school uniform, so here we present our opinions for and against uniforms.
For School Uniform
School uniform. What is the point? Nobody looks good in them, they cost a load of money and where we all dislike school as much as we do, do we really want something stating that we “belong” there?
No matter how negatively we may view our uniform, it is there for our own safety. They prevent bullying, save our parents money every year, make the school day more comfortable, is practical for the average school day and helps prevent us from getting lost on school trips.
Also, anything good that we do outside of school, if done in our school uniform, can then be fed back to the school, and the teachers are bound to appreciate just that little bit more.
In my opinion, school uniforms are great (okay, maybe not in the way they look). They save me so much time in the morning, I’d be having panic attacks about what to wear, if I’ll look stupid compared to her, or if they’ll remember that I wore the same outfit last week! (It also gives me more time to sleep in the morning if I don’t have choose what to wear.)
I also don’t have the money to make sure that I have enough clothes to wear something different to school every single day of the school year; not to mention that fashion changes ALL the time, so to keep up that?! You gotta be kidding me!
School uniforms are an essential way to maintain equality throughout, nobody can have better than the other person and wealthy people and not so wealthy people cannot be separated by looks, trends and fashion. Having uniform in a school also prepares the pupils for their careers, most jobs have a uniform or clothing scheme and expect all their employees to wear what their told, pupils shouldn’t get into the habit of wearing their own clothes in a working environment.
Government guidance is that it’s up to the schools and Local Education Authorities (LEA’s) to decide whether to have a uniform. Schools should have uniforms as it improves a schools community spirit and camaraderie.
Against School uniform
School uniform. Good or Bad? What do you think? I’m not really one for school uniform because I think that it stops you from being yourself, stops you from expressing yourself.School uniform is a bad idea because it takes away your personality.
Even though school uniform stops some bullying it can still happen because your school uniform can be “scatty” and dirty just like your own clothes can cause bullying.
School uniform costs your parents large amounts of money. Last year my
mum spent £150 + on uniform for me and my sister and that’s just polo shirts,
jumpers and trousers! And halfway through the year or so I have to get new
school uniform because I have grown or it’s ripped and the list goes on.
Creative Education Blog said that school uniform prepares children for futures careers. I’m against this because we are still children and are not ready to know what it’s like to be treated like an adult and I personally think that we are not mentally ready yet.
I have a question for you to answer: do you think that uniform helps school results? I don’t think they do because if you have a negative approach to school it doesn’t matter if you are wearing your own clothes or a uniform, you’re still gonna have a negative approach. And if you have positive approach to school your still gonna have a positive approach no matter what.
What do you think about school uniform? Do you think it takes way your personality? Does it make you concentrate more? Or would you rather wear everyday clothes to school? Let us know what you think below!!!

Maybe you're not old enough to be treated like an adult whislt in primary school to know what it's like to be treated like an adult, when you turn eleven you are condidered to be a "young person" by the government. I know I am only fifteen, but when someone refers to me as I child, I do get quite offended, because to me a child is someone who is not able to look after themselves for a few hours and plays with dolls and cars. I think uniforms are really good, and although I do agree with some points in the against arguement, I'm still for them. Also, most people on this website are about to enter the world of work or already have, so we do need to be prepared for it now.

Some good thoughts Jess. I never really liked my uniform, but it was easier to put that on every day instead of fretting about what to wear if I was allowed to wear normal clothes.
I wonder if there's a way to make school uniform more cooler? I wonder if that would help its image?

It probably would help it's image, and there probably is a way to do so, but I reckon the teachers want to see us look like silly like they had to when they were in school :)

I think some schools are way too strict with uniforms. We aren't allowed cardigans because "It will ruin the smartness". In the summer, a number of girls fainted as they weren't allowed to take their jumpers off. Our uniform also looks stupid. Light blue shirts/blouses, navy trousers (grey for boys) and navy jumpers that HAVE to have the badge on and then a burgundy tie with yellow and blue stripes. It looks ridiculous. It's also really expensive to buy and navy trousers are a nightmare to buy!
Schools really need to cut some slack with uniforms. I know they don't want us to be "picked on" for our clothes but people still get at you for something to do with your uniform anyway!
Great article, by the way :)

I understand where you coming from, but it has been proven that uniform has prevented bullying within schools (WOOOO) I'd rather look ridiculous knowing that everyone else looks ridiculous than get bullied for looking "ridiculous" D:
I'm also slightly biased in this argument as I helped write the against side >:D... o.O
