Children in Need 2011 - Friday 18th November

We’re all aware of Children in Need (yes, it’s the one with the yellow bear with an eye patch), but do you have any idea of the history of Pudsey and his origins. Children in Need is an annual British charity appeal organised by the BBC and since 1980 it has raised over £500 million! Now, if you ask me, that’s pretty good! Well done to the BBC.

In the very beginning Children in Need did not start off as Children in Need. It was first a telethon, and the BBC first held it to raise money for children’s charities across the UK. When they eventually changed the format to Children in Need, they saw a huge increase in viewers and in public donations raising £1 million pounds that year.

Finally, in 1988, Children in Need became a registered charity in England and Wales, with Scotland registering afterwards in 2008. Year on year the campaign grows helping children who need it most across the UK.

Children In Need is being celebrated nationally once again on Friday 18th November 2011 and as always it will be featuring loads of charity events and sponsored events! The show is broadcast from studios all over the UK and big events are being held in places like Manchester called ‘Manchester Rocks!’ Gary Barlow from Take That has got loads of different famous acts to play at the charity event to raise money for Children In Need! Acts featuring are Ed Sheeran, N-Dubz, Cold Play and many, many more!

Another event being run by Blue Peter is “Bake A Difference”! All you have to do is get a bunch of your mates together, bake a load of stuff and hold a bake sale in your local area! Then get in touch with Blue Peter and let them know what you did, how you did it and how much you made!

To get involved with Children in Need this year all you need to do is get your fundraising pack from Children in Need on their BBC website. The pack contains everything you’ll need to help you choose what to do and how to do it, including ideas, stickers, forms, posters and loads more!
