When Geordie singer Cheryl Cole announced to her loyal fans that she was taking a break from the most popular televised girl band Girls Aloud most expected that to be the end of the five most successful females of the twenty first century. Yet after Cole released her first solo album, 3 words, it seems the nations favourite sweetheart has managed to gain the respect of both critics and fans.

The album which, is appropriately titled 3 words features collaborations from other popular artists such as Taio Cruz and Will.i.am, which shows Coles contemporary and fresh sound. After the success of her first hit Fight For This Love most critics drew comparisons between Coles loyalty to football sensation Ashley Cole as the lyrics suggest regardless of his infidelity – “Fight, fight, fight for this love”. This edgy catchy tune can be replayed and never get boring!

The ballad `Don’t Talk About This Love` shows off Cheryl’s strong vocal ability. Vocally, it’s a big surprise, fellow fans of Girls Aloud will be greeted by a confident direct Cheryl , in my opinion someone who wasn’t portrayed as much in the band ,yet the lyrics highlight her more vulnerable nature. It also emphases her refusal to allow anyone into her personal affairs:” The less they know, the less they judge Don’t talk about this love to anyone”. However Rain On Me was a disappointment. The lyrics are unrelatable, lack character and charisma, the lack of personality injected into the lyrics along with the basicnes of the music caused the song to be hard to listen to and quite frankly boring!

On the whole though, Cole makes a good attempt at attempting to become an independent singer, producing tracks that are clearly personal to her and portraying her true feelings on issues that she refuses to discuss with the press, most of the songs are upbeat and deliver a positive a message with a pop vibe. Tracks such as Fight For This Love and Parachute will undoubtedly provoke success for Cheryl, but in my opinion the album lacked the same energy and quality that Girls Aloud seemed to always bring.
