Mass Effect 2: The Review (15)
Mass Effect 2 is a huge improvement on the first installment. A massive game which uses two discs a first for the X-Box and Playstation world. Between completing mandatory game missions and sub missions you can easily have a 40 hour game and still not have completed everything.
Importing your character from the first game will affect how you play number 2. Keeping certain characters alive and making certain choices will affect your starting level and your paragon and renegade level. There are a lot of new interesting characters, and some races that you haven’t seen before. There are even a few old faces from the Mass Effect 1. You have the choice to personalise your armor which gives the game a more personal feel.
You start the game watching an amazing video of your ship, the SSV Normandy being attacked by a mysterious enemy. The graphics are very high quality and very clear. It is a very effective and brilliant opening to the game. On your new ship, a newer model of your old ship, Normandy SR-2, you can explore a lot of new solar systems and planets. A fun new aspect of the game is that when travelling between and exploring systems and plants, you control a mini version of the Normandy. You have to scan planets to find resources and minerals which you have to use to upgrade your armor, weapons and the Normandy.
However, the biggest disappointment of the game would have to be the speed of the scanning; it is very slow and monotonous. Even with the upgrades to the scanner it gets extremely repetitive. One aspect Mass Effect 1 had better. An improvement to the achievement list is that it doesn’t require four or five playthroughs unlike Mass Effect 1. The minimum amount you would have to play through is two to get your 1000 gamer score.
Over all the graphics and game play is a lot better quality than Mass Effect 1. With damage recognition you can aim onto enemies’ limbs and see them get blown off, another aspect that greatly improves Mass Effect 2. A huge game that will improve the quality of a lot of other role playing games in the future.
Empire gave Mass Effect 2
