Introducing STEM Cymru
Engineering Education Scheme Wales (STEM Cymru)
We are an independent registered charity, established in 1989, running exciting and hands-on activities to inspire and motivate young people to consider choosing a career in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
We run a number of initiatives including Engineering Education Scheme Wales, F1 in Schools, Headstart Cymru, I2E/Go4SET, Year In Industry and Girls Into Engineering.
Since July 2010 STEM Cymru has engaged with over 1000 young people aged between 12 and 19, with aid from a European Union grant. We run numerous activities, providing students with the opportunity to gain practical experience working with industries, businesses and higher education.
Activities include designing, making and racing a model F1 car, working with companies on real engineering problems, experiencing life as an engineering undergraduate at university and investigating, designing and modelling an innovative solution to an environmental problem.
This year we held an Engineering Awareness Day for girls at Margam Park in association with the Army. Over 150 girls attended and participated in team building activities, as well as problem solving and decision making tasks.
When participating in our activities students benefit from gaining further knowledge and a better understanding of STEM subjects, as well as developing skills and discovering future career opportunities. Our activities also allow students to achieve CREST Awards, UCAS points and Essential Skills accreditation.
Many of the students participating in our activities have achieved enormous success. Students from Ysgol Botwnnog, Gwynedd were successful at the F1 In Schools National Final in London, achieving first place. They will now represent the UK at the International Final in Malaysia.
Over 400 EESW sixth form students gained Silver and Gold CREST awards, and developed original solutions to the engineering problem provided by their link company.
