'Board n Beats' Dinas Powys 2010

What a weekend!! On Saturday Swoosh was at 'Boards n Beats' 2010 Music, Skate, BMX Fest in Bryn - Y - Don Skate Park, Dinas Powys. This event was run by the Vale of Glamorgan's V-POD ( managed by Vibe Experience) and PULSE team (the Vale of Glamorgan Youth Service). Togther these teams make up the Vale Youth Street Team. Boards n Beats the first event of its kind to hit the Vale of Glamorgan - and what an event it was.

The rain and clouds were pretty testing setting up in the morning... but come rain or shine this event was going ahead. And put it this way - no rain was going to stop these 100 or so skaters, bikers and fans. Young people of all ages came from all nooks and crannies of South Wales! Dinas Powys, Barry, Penarth, Llantwit Major, St Athan and more just from the Vale alone. There was also young people from Cardiff, Newport, Bridgend, Aberdare and Pontyclun - Good on you for getting there.

Pitched up at Bryn - Y- Don the team of workers set up the V-POD multimedia bus, staging, information and promo marquees, BBQ tent, chillout marquee and a pretty banging sound system. The day was action packed as young people arrived on site, signing in, getting tickets for their free BBQ food, showing off their skateboarding, skating and biking skills for everyone to marvel. As the sun crept up throughout the day, so did the crowds.

The V-POD team also offered skaters and bikers the chance to star in their very own extreme/adrenaline skate park film! (As featured on Swoosh!) The entire footage was filmed and edited on site, capturing some of the finest talent in South Wales. I was utterly gob smacked at some of the skill displayed by the young people out there. No matter the age, everyone got stuck to show off their awesome stunts and tricks, whether they were featuring in the film or the competitions.

Young people at Dinas 'Boards n Beats' organised some brilliant competitions throughout the day on the half pipe and the entire park for skateboarders, skaters and bikers. The winner of each competition were voted for by the cheering crowd.

Local dance programme Motion Control were in attendance with their fantastic B-Boys. The B-Boys freestyled some brilliant moves on stage, showing Bryn-Y-Don their breakdancing talent. These B-Boys will be heading to Germany soon to represent the Vale of Glamorgan and Wales in the World Street Dance Championship. So Swoosh wishes you all the best for Germany in October!

Swoosh was able to speak to lots of people at the event, and the feedback couldn't have been more positive if they'd tried. Many of these young people love to skate so much that they are willing to travel. There are a number of skate parks across the Vale of Glamorgan, and a small Boards n Beats event was also held in Llantwit Major skate park earlier this month. But I believe Board n Beats to be one of many, getting bigger every year!

Next year the Vale Youth Street Team: V-POD and PULSE will be looking for event sponsors, pro skaters, young local skaters and bikers, as well local bands to be a part of future events. Swoosh was delighted to be involved covering the event and will certainly be there for the years to come.
