'Awkward!' - Awkward Animals...

Have you ever heard of an awkward turtle? No?….. well this is awkward. An awkward turtle is a hand gesture used in an awkward moment, for example if a friend tells a joke but no one finds it funny.

Tom: “Why do polar bears not eat penguins?”

Chloe: “Urrmm – I don’t know Tom?”

Tom: “Because they can’t get the wrapper off! Ha Ha Ha!!”

Chloe + Friends: “.........................” *Silence*

There are many awkward animals and symbols that stand for moments of awkwardness and its all down to how you use them. There are awkward animals such as the turtle, llama, bunny, giraffe, squid, jelly fish and salmon. There is even an awkward palm tree, but the one which you must catch on film is the awkward beached whale! This is when someone lies on the floor and starts to randomly swing their arms and legs around to make it look as if they are stranded.

My personal favourite awkward symbol would have to be the classic awkward turtle along with very awkward palm tree and the hilarious awkward beached whale. But what I want I want to know is what is your favourite?

There are so many to choose from – where do they all do they all come from?! I don’t know that but I can tell you how you do them!

Awkward Turtle

Place your hands on top of each other straighten out both palms, and spin your thumbs forward.

Awkward Bunny

Stick your two fingers up that you would use for a peace sign, then bend the fingers and bounce the pretend rabbit up and down.

Awkward Giraffe

Make two fists, as there are three syllables in “awkward giraffe”, bump your fist on top of the other twice, then for the last syllable straighten out your arm, and make your two middle fingers touch with the other two fingers extended, whilst resting your elbow on your fist.

Awkward Llama

Awkward llama is the same as awkward giraffe, just there are no fists involved.

Awkward Balloon

For this you can either just hold your fist in the air (holding the imaginary ballon) or pretend to blow up and tie a balloon, hold your fist in the air and then open it, and pull an unhappy whilst watching the imaginary balloon float away :(

Awkward Palm Tree

There are two ways you can do this, the first is the same steps for awkward giraffe (including the fists), but instead of using your arm, you flap your hands over each other. The second (my favourite of the two) is to stand up straight and then flap your arms crossed over your head (so your arms hands are hanging by your ears).

Awkward Beached Whale

My favourite! You lay down on the floor on your back and flap your arms and legs around whilst making distressed noises.

Awkward Tent

Slant your straight palm, and lean them against each to make a triangle. A friend can then put an awkward turtle in the tent and say “how awkward is that!”.

There are loads more “awkward animals” including awkward baby turtles, and awkward dead turtle floating away with in the tide. If you have any awkward animals, share them as a comment below.
