Unemployment can be really tough, especially if you have been out of work for a long time. Struggling to pay for things, having nothing to fill your time and no extra money to do things is boring and frustrating.
While you're out of work, it is important to be careful with your money and find out if you are entitled to any benefits or support whilst you look for a job.
If you are unemployed you can claim certain benefits depending on your age and circumstances.
If you’re looking for work, but unemployed or working less than 16 hours a week, you might be able to claim Jobseekers Allowance (JSA), which is a fortnightly payment for those looking for a job.
Schemes like the New Deal for Young People (aged 18 - 24) mean that people claiming Jobseekers Allowance can access to a personal adviser, whose job is to help you get a job.
If you are 16 or 17 years old you might be able to get income based JSA for a short time. This depends your personal situation, for example if you live away from your parents, you are responsible for a child or if you would find it very difficult to live with without JSA.
To find out if you qualify for JSA visit your local job centre and meet with an advisor.
It can take a while for your claim to be processed so it is a good idea to go to the Jobcentre as soon as you are unemployed to find out if you are entitled to any financial support. This is really important if you have rent and bills to pay, or have children.
The Jobcentre can help you look for work, help you find work that suit you and have a database of jobs available that you can search through.
You could also go to an advice service such as Careers Wales who will have lists of jobs available and can give advice on getting back to work.
