  • You have a right to free state education until your nineteenth birthday.

  • You have the right to leave school when you are 16 at the end of Year 11.

  • You have a right to be treated fairly without discrimination.

  • In Year 9 you have the right to choose which subjects you wish to study in Years 10 and 11 in addition to the compulsory subjects (Maths, English and Science).

  • School rules (read our article) are usually based on common sense and if you feel really unhappy about a school rule you could ask the school council to raise it as an issue (read our article on school councils).

  • You have no right under the law to choose which state school you go to. Schools are able to make their own decisions about who can attend, usually based on geographical area. Your parents can say which one you would prefer but it doesn‘t mean you will go there.

  • Having rights in school also means you have responsibilities as a pupil to obey school rules (read our article on school rules) and to treat other pupils, teachers and other staff fairly and with respect.
