Victoria Beckham, Cheryl Cole and Nichole Richie are all famous well known celebrities that influence millions of young people across the UK due to their apparent success and high status. As a result their young followers attempt and aspire to be just like their favoured celebs, copying everything from their handbag dogs to their must have outfits and of course their lack of calorie intake, causing them to have the “deadly dainty” look that these fragile females constantly parade.

Due to the constant media attention these celebs attract, teens become influenced by them. They are perceived as being the ideal body weight , they seem to attract men and money and are always smiling. They are apparently perfect and perfection is something that most people strive for. It is of course impossible and the health risks and danger these celebs are putting themselves into are never highlighted- the materialistic is recognised yet the reality is covered up, not discussed and brushed under the carpet.

According to the National Eating Disorder Association, 42 percent of 7- 9 year old girls say they want to be thinner, and 81 percent of 10 year olds are afraid of being fat. Even at very young ages, children get influenced by celebrities.

Some singers such as Pink have spoken out about the dangers of underweight celebs influencing young teens. In her singles chart topping “Stupid Girls” she has criticised the way both female and male superstars seem to portray themselves asking –“What happened to the dream of a girl President, she's dancing in the video next to 50 cent” her video was stylised in a way to depict the absurdity of celeb life.

The risks of anorexia have been fatal a Brazilian model , Ana Carolina Reston, died at the age of 21, weighing 88 pounds. She had anorexia nervosa and was extremely underweight. These are the people many teens want to follow and portray. The celebrities and fashion models cause teens to think extreme dieting is normal when it is actually very dangerous.

In my view, I believe that unhealthy and underweight celebs should not be portrayed as postive role models or idols in the media eye. They are responsible for inspiring teens, a role model should be someone who is happy, healthy and confident not stick thin, starving and depressed, faking a smile for the paparazzi and of course their young fans!
